R22 gas is still legal to buy and use in the UAE in 2026. It is not banned. But it is being phased out worldwide under the Montreal Protocol, supply is shrinking, and prices are rising. The standard cylinder is 13.6 kg, and most UAE suppliers quote on request rather than publishing a price. If you have R22 equipment, the question is no longer whether to replace it, but when.
This guide covers what R22 costs, where the law actually stands in the UAE, what cylinder sizes exist, and how to decide between repairing and replacing.
What is R22 gas?
R22 is an older cooling gas, used in air conditioners for decades before newer gases replaced it. Its proper name is HCFC-22, and you’ll also hear it called Freon, R-22 or just “the green gas,” because R22 cylinders are light green.
The problem with R22 is chlorine. When R22 leaks into the atmosphere, the chlorine damages the ozone layer. That’s why the world agreed to phase it out. Newer gases like R410A and R32 don’t contain chlorine and don’t cause this damage.
If your AC is more than about twelve years old, there’s a reasonable chance it runs on R22. Check the label on the outdoor unit. It will say which gas the system uses.
R22 specifications
| Property | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Proper name | HCFC-22, chlorodifluoromethane | A single gas, not a blend |
| Ozone damage (ODP) | 0.055 | Small but real. This is why it’s being phased out |
| Global warming potential | 1,810 | High |
| Safety rating | A1 | Doesn’t burn, low toxicity |
| Boiling point | −40.8 °C | |
| Critical temperature | 96.1 °C | Handles high heat better than R410A does |
| Working pressure | Around 1.8 MPa | Much lower pressure than R410A |
| Oil used | Mineral oil | Different from the POE oil R410A needs |
| Cylinder colour | Light green | |
| Standard cylinder | 13.6 kg (30 lb) |
One thing worth noting: R22 actually copes with UAE heat better than R410A does. Its critical temperature is 96 °C, against R410A’s 71 °C, which gives it more margin on a 48 °C afternoon. That’s not a reason to keep it — the ozone damage settles that argument — but it does explain why some older systems keep running in conditions where newer ones struggle.
Is R22 legal in the UAE in 2026?
Yes. R22 is legal to buy, sell and use in the UAE in 2026. There is no rule requiring you to stop using existing R22 equipment or to replace it.
This confuses a lot of people, because almost everything you’ll read online about “the R22 ban” is American or European. Those rules are real, but they are not UAE law.
What those foreign rules actually say:
- United States: production and import of new R22 stopped on 1 January 2020. Servicing now relies on recycled and reclaimed gas only.
- Europe: the phase-out finished years ago.
- Australia: bulk R22 imports are limited now and banned entirely from 1 January 2030.
None of that applies here.
What applies in the UAE:
The UAE is a party to the Montreal Protocol and follows the phase-out schedule set for developing countries. Under that schedule, HCFC use is cut in stages rather than stopped at once, with a small servicing allowance continuing after the main cuts. The UAE banned CFCs back in 2010 and has been reducing HCFCs since.
The UAE has also stated an intention to eliminate these harmful refrigerants by 2040, in line with its Montreal Protocol commitments.
Separately, businesses importing or trading refrigerant gases in the UAE need to be registered with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and hold the relevant permits. That applies to your supplier, and it’s worth checking they have it.
Because national rules change as the phase-out progresses, confirm the current position with MOCCAE at moccae.gov.ae before making decisions on a large site.
What this means in practice
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I service my R22 AC in 2026? | Yes |
| Can I still buy R22 in the UAE? | Yes, from licensed suppliers |
| Do I have to replace my R22 equipment? | No, not by law |
| Can I buy a new R22 air conditioner? | Effectively no. Manufacturers stopped making them. |
| Will R22 get harder to find? | Yes. That’s the real issue. |
The honest summary: nobody is going to fine you for having R22. The pressure is commercial, not legal. Supply keeps shrinking, the price keeps climbing, and one day your technician will tell you he couldn’t source any. That’s the risk to plan around.
R22 gas price in the UAE, 2026
Here’s something you should know upfront. Most UAE suppliers don’t publish R22 prices. Search for it and you’ll find product pages that say “contact us for best price” rather than a number. That’s not suppliers being difficult — it’s a sign of how the market works now. Supply is inconsistent, batches vary, and prices move faster than a website can keep up with.
Approximate ranges, September 2026. Treat these as a starting point for negotiation, not a quotation.
| Cylinder size | Approximate trade price | Approximate per kg |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kg can | AED 70 – 120 | AED 70 – 120 |
| 3.4 kg | AED 180 – 260 | AED 53 – 76 |
| 6.8 kg | AED 300 – 420 | AED 44 – 62 |
| 13.6 kg (standard) | AED 380 – 600 | AED 28 – 44 |
| Refillable 60 kg | Quoted on request | — |
Always ask for a written quote with the batch and origin stated. For current availability and pricing, get in touch.
Why R22 prices behave differently to other gases
Supply, not demand. With most gases, price follows the season. With R22, the bigger factor is whether your supplier can get stock at all. Production is winding down globally, so availability is patchy.
It moves one direction over time. R410A prices go up and down with the season. R22 has a long-term upward trend, because there is less of it every year and no new production coming.
Reclaimed gas is entering the market. As more R22 systems get decommissioned, recovered and cleaned gas becomes a bigger share of supply. Reclaimed R22 is legitimate if it meets purity standards, and it’s often cheaper. Ask what you’re being sold.
Quality varies more than it used to. As legitimate supply tightens, the risk of contaminated or mislabeled cylinders rises. More on that below.
R22 cylinder sizes
| Size | Type | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 320 g / 340 g / 1 kg cans | Disposable | Small top-ups, retail |
| 3.4 kg (7.5 lb) | Disposable | Small service jobs |
| 6.8 kg (15 lb) | Disposable | Medium jobs |
| 13.6 kg (30 lb) | Disposable | The standard cylinder |
| 6.5 / 12 / 60 kg | Refillable | Higher volume users |
| 500 kg / 950 kg tanks | Bulk | Distributors, very large sites |
The 13.6 kg disposable cylinder is the standard. Note this is a different size to R410A’s 11.3 kg cylinder — an easy mistake when you’re comparing quotes. Always compare cost per kilogram, not cost per cylinder.
A typical 13.6 kg cylinder measures about 420 mm tall and 241 mm across, so it fits standard storage and van racking without trouble.
On the small cans: they cost two to three times more per kilogram than a full cylinder. If your team is buying cans regularly, you have a leak problem, not a supply problem.
How much R22 does a system need?
Approximate figures for planning an order only. Always charge to the equipment nameplate.
| System size | Approximate charge | Full recharges per 13.6 kg cylinder |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ton (12,000 BTU) split | 0.9 – 1.2 kg | About 12 |
| 1.5 ton (18,000 BTU) split | 1.3 – 1.7 kg | About 9 |
| 2 ton (24,000 BTU) split | 1.8 – 2.3 kg | About 6 |
| 3 ton (36,000 BTU) | 2.7 – 3.4 kg | About 4 |
| 5 ton packaged | 4.5 – 5.5 kg | About 2 or 3 |
R22 systems generally hold slightly more gas than an equivalent R410A system, because R22 is less dense in operation.
Repair or replace? The calculation nobody does
This is the real decision, and most people get to it the wrong way — by waiting for a breakdown and then reacting.
Here’s the way to think about it.
Say you have a 3 ton R22 unit that’s fourteen years old and losing gas.
Option A: keep repairing it.
- Recharge: roughly 3 kg at AED 35/kg = AED 105
- Leak repair labor: AED 600 – 1,200
- Do this once or twice a year
- Plus: it uses more electricity than a modern unit, because efficiency has improved a lot in fourteen years
- Plus: R22 gets more expensive and harder to find every year
- Plus: at some point a major component fails and parts are hard to source
Option B: replace it with an R32 or R410A unit.
- Higher upfront cost
- Lower electricity bills, and in the UAE cooling is the biggest line on the bill
- No supply risk
- New warranty
The point most people miss: the gas is the smallest number in this calculation. Electricity is the biggest one. An AC that’s fourteen years old and leaking is running inefficiently, in a climate where it runs eight or nine months of the year. That’s where the money goes, not into the cylinder.
A simple rule. If your R22 unit is over ten years old and has needed gas twice in two years, get a replacement quote. You may find the payback period is shorter than you expected. If it’s under ten years and holding its charge, repair it and plan the replacement for later.
Can I put a different gas in my R22 system?
Not R410A, and not R32. Both run at much higher pressure than R22 and use a different compressor oil. Putting either into an R22 system will destroy the compressor and creates a safety risk. This is not a shortcut anyone should take.
There are R22 replacement blends designed to work in existing R22 systems, such as R407C and R422 series products. These are called retrofits. They can work, but:
- The system usually needs the oil changed to POE
- You typically lose some cooling capacity
- It must be done by a technician who knows the specific blend
- On an old system, the cost of doing it properly often approaches the cost of replacement
Get a technician to assess the specific system before committing. A retrofit makes sense on a large, relatively young system with plenty of life left. On a fifteen-year-old split AC, it rarely does.
How to buy R22 safely in the UAE
As legitimate supply tightens, the risk of getting something other than what’s on the label goes up. Cylinders sold as R22 have been found containing other gases, or mixtures.
What to check:
- Supplier registration. Your supplier should be registered with MOCCAE and able to show it.
- Cylinder markings. Light green cylinder, with a batch number, fill date and manufacturer name printed on it. No markings is a warning sign.
- Safety Data Sheet. Ask for it. A real supplier has one ready.
- Purity certificate. Especially important with reclaimed gas. Ask whether it’s virgin or reclaimed, and get it in writing.
- A price that makes sense. If the rate is far below everyone else in the market, ask why. In a tightening market, unusually cheap gas is a red flag rather than a bargain.
- Use a refrigerant identifier before charging anything valuable. Contaminated gas destroys compressors, and a compressor costs far more than the tool.
Storing R22 cylinders
R22 runs at lower pressure than R410A, but the storage rules are the same and they matter in UAE heat.
Store in shade, below 45 °C, upright and secured. Never leave cylinders in a closed van in summer, because a parked van in Dubai passes 65 °C easily. Never apply heat to a cylinder to speed up charging. Keep them away from direct sunlight.
Common questions about R22 gas
Is R22 banned in the UAE?
No. R22 is legal to buy, sell and use in the UAE in 2026, and there’s no rule forcing you to replace existing equipment. The bans you’ll read about online are US, European and Australian rules. The UAE is reducing HCFCs in stages under the Montreal Protocol rather than banning them outright.
How much does R22 cost in the UAE?
Roughly AED 380 to 600 for the standard 13.6 kg cylinder, which is about AED 28 to 44 per kg. Most UAE suppliers quote on request rather than publishing prices, because availability changes. Expect the trend to be upward over time as global supply shrinks.
What size cylinder does R22 come in?
The standard is 13.6 kg, which is 30 lb. Smaller disposables come in 3.4 kg and 6.8 kg, plus 320 g to 1 kg cans. Refillable cylinders come in 6.5, 12 and 60 kg. Note that 13.6 kg differs from R410A’s 11.3 kg cylinder, so compare per kilogram.
Can I use R410A in my R22 air conditioner?
No. R410A runs at 50 to 60 percent higher pressure and needs a different oil. R22 components can’t handle it, and the compressor will fail. If you want a newer refrigerant, you need new equipment or a proper retrofit blend fitted by a qualified technician.
Should I replace my R22 air conditioner?
Not urgently, but plan for it. If the unit is over ten years old and has needed gas more than once in two years, get a replacement quote. The main saving is usually electricity rather than gas, since AC efficiency has improved considerably and cooling dominates UAE power bills.
How long will R22 be available in the UAE?
Nobody can give a firm date. Global production is winding down, and supply increasingly comes from reclaimed gas recovered from decommissioned systems. Expect it to remain available for some years yet, at steadily rising prices, with availability becoming less reliable over time.
